Heat-pump water heaters

Does a heat-pump water heater add to my home’s winter heating use?

Homeowner guide · 2 min read

MGI’s recommendation: Yes, drawing heat from conditioned indoor air can increase winter space-heating use. The amount depends on the home. Compare water heating and space heating together before treating the heater’s efficiency rating as a complete estimate for a gas-heated basement.

The Department of Energy’s February 2012 Building America guide describes that interaction and the corresponding potential cooling benefit. It establishes the principle, not the size of your home’s penalty or savings. DOE Building America guide, interaction with space conditioning

Ask the qualified provider to compare the current water-heating arrangement with the complete proposed project. The estimate should identify the air source and exhaust destination, the basement’s seasonal temperatures, expected hot-water demand, and the operation of both heating systems.

For a gas-heated home, request the assumed furnace efficiency, electricity rate, gas rate, and seasonal heating effect. Use the actual utility accounts and applicable rates. The estimate should separate equipment energy use from fixed charges that would remain, and show which assumptions make the largest difference.

Ducting changes the air arrangement, so it needs its own assessment. Ask whether the plan introduces replacement outdoor air, changes pressure, or changes the amount of heat drawn from the home. Moving exhaust outdoors does not by itself prove the winter interaction disappears.

This is a comparison problem, not a reason to reject every heat-pump water heater in Colorado. A proposal may still make sense when the full energy estimate, hot-water performance, comfort, installation cost, and ownership needs fit the home. A cold or unsuitable location can change that recommendation.

Ask for a range based on realistic seasonal conditions, rather than one guaranteed monthly savings number. If the provider cannot quantify the interaction, have them identify the uncertainty plainly and compare a reasonable alternative under the same assumptions.

For an existing unit, a year of utility and water-use context can help evaluate performance. A bill change alone does not isolate the heater’s effect because weather, occupancy, rates, and other equipment use can change too.

Send the current heater type, proposed model and location, heating equipment information, and recent rate details. Our next step would be a documented whole-home comparison before treating the water-heater rating as the purchase decision.
