Heat-pump water heaters
Is a garage that drops below freezing a workable heat-pump water-heater location?
MGI’s recommendation: Do not approve a below-freezing garage location on the assumption that electric backup protects the tank. The installation must satisfy both the equipment’s operating limits and the need to protect water-containing parts from freezing.
For example, A. O. Smith’s August 2022 hybrid manual requires a location that will not freeze. It permits heat-pump operation within its stated air-temperature range, above 37°F and below 120°F, with electric operation outside that range. Those are separate conditions for equipment covered by that manual. A. O. Smith hybrid manual, location and operation
A garage reported below 30°F needs a site-specific answer before purchase. Record temperatures at the proposed heater location during representative cold conditions, including overnight lows. Tell the installer how often the door opens, whether the garage is heated, and what happens during a power outage.
Ask the qualified provider to identify the exact model’s installation and operating requirements and explain how the site meets them. Require an assessment of the tank, connected piping, valves, and drain arrangements, rather than checking compressor temperature alone.
A plan that depends on adding dependable heat or changing the building needs a separate qualified owner and a complete project estimate. It also needs to address an outage. Do not accept “use a space heater when it gets cold” as a designed, dependable protection plan for the water system.
Compare another approved indoor location, a suitable different water-heating approach, or a properly designed project that makes the proposed location meet its requirements. Each option should include access, hot-water delivery, electrical or fuel needs, and any building work.
If a heater is already installed and freezing is possible, request prompt model-specific direction from the responsible provider. Report any loss of water flow, suspected frozen components, or leak. Avoid a homemade thawing or restart procedure.
We would choose the option whose written design remains suitable during the conditions the home actually experiences. Send the model, garage temperature history, and outage pattern, and ask for an explicit location determination before committing to equipment or relocation work.
