Heat-pump water heaters
Will a heat-pump water heater disturb nearby bedrooms?
MGI’s recommendation: Treat bedroom noise as a selection and placement requirement before buying. A published sound rating helps compare products, but it does not promise quiet in the room where you sleep.
Rheem’s current ProTerra page advertises 45 dBA and specifies that the measurement was made at 6.28 feet using third-party certified testing procedures. That measurement is a product reference, not the expected sound level in your bedroom or proof that every older ProTerra unit has the same rating. Rheem ProTerra sound information and footnote
Give the installer the exact proposed model and a plan showing the utility room, bedroom walls, doors, and the bed location. Describe the times you need quiet and whether a steady hum, vibration, or higher-pitched sound bothers you. “Near the bedroom” needs to become a specific design constraint.
Ask for current model-specific sound data, the measurement conditions, and a site assessment of how the sound could reach the occupied space. A demonstration of the same model can help set expectations, especially if you are sensitive to noise. A phone recording of a different unit is a limited comparison because the equipment, room, and recording method differ.
Compare placement choices before relying on soundproofing. A proposed enclosure or duct arrangement must also meet the heater’s airflow, clearance, and service requirements. Have the provider explain the approved design and who handles any building work. Do not wrap the unit, block openings, or add an improvised cabinet.
If the heater is already installed, document the sound and when it occurs, with the current mode and any error code. Ask a qualified technician to distinguish normal operation from a verified installation or equipment problem. Being bothered by the sound is enough to request an assessment, but it does not identify a defective compressor.
We would favor a location and model that fit both hot-water needs and the household’s quiet hours. If that fit cannot be reasonably established, compare another location or a suitable alternative water heater, including the full project requirements.
Before committing, request the exact equipment specification, placement drawing, sound assumptions, and the terms for handling an unexpected noise complaint. Those terms need to be written and approved by the responsible provider; do not assume a noise-related replacement or refund is included.
