Heat-pump water heaters

Why does my heat-pump water heater work again only after a power reset?

Homeowner guide · 2 min read

MGI’s recommendation: Arrange diagnosis while preserving the fault history. A reset that restores heating is useful evidence, but repeated resets do not identify or repair the cause.

The compressor is the part that squeezes the heat-carrying gas, raising its temperature so heat can reach the water. DOE explanation of heat-pump operation, December 2009

Rheem’s AP23657 Rev 04 hybrid manual includes distinct compressor, sensor, and controller alarms. Its model-specific troubleshooting requires different checks for different faults. The fact that a fan is running does not select one of those diagnoses. Rheem hybrid manual, alarm troubleshooting

Before another reset, record the complete code or message, the time, heater mode, temperature setting, and what you observed. Note how long the unit had been running, how much hot water was used, the room temperature, and whether the same pattern followed a previous outage or reset. Take display photographs from a safe location.

Ask the qualified technician to evaluate the heater during the failed state if possible. The service record should establish the actual tank temperature, whether heating is being called for, and which heating functions operate. Then have the technician perform the manufacturer’s applicable checks for the verified fault, including compressor operation, sensors, and controls where indicated.

Do not remove covers, test voltage, change wiring, or force a compressor or safety control to run. If electrical items may be wet, stay away and request qualified direction. Follow only a user-level reset that the applicable instructions and provider identify as appropriate for the condition; do not repeatedly cycle power to keep an unexplained fault out of view.

A useful diagnosis explains both the failure and why a reset temporarily changes it. A proposed board or compressor replacement should be supported by the relevant test results. Request the findings and any manufacturer support reference before comparing repair and replacement.

If the provider approves a temporary operating mode, ask for its exact limits and stopping conditions. Otherwise, plan for unreliable hot water until the fault is resolved. Confirm the actual appointment and the follow-up plan if parts or manufacturer review delay the repair.

Our next step would be a documented fault visit, followed by a repeat test under the conditions that previously failed. Keep the previous reset dates and time to recurrence. They give the technician a better starting point than a unit that appears healthy only because its history was erased.
