Indoor air quality
Why doesn't my small purifier clear smoke across the rest of the house?
It may be doing a useful job in its own room while being too small or poorly placed for the larger area. Our recommendation is to check its tested particle delivery, the room layout, and the operating setting before treating it as a whole-home solution. One cleaner's outlet or built-in sensor cannot show what every room experiences.
Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) describes how quickly a room cleaner removes the tested particles. AHAM's guidance distinguishes dust, pollen, and smoke ratings and ties the choice to room size. For wildfire smoke, it recommends a smoke CADR matched to the room area in square feet. That is a selection guide, not a guarantee for a complicated floor plan. AHAM's air-cleaner guidance.
Find the exact model's rating and recommended area. Include the whole connected area it is expected to serve, then consider closed bedrooms and separate floors as distinct practical spaces. Do not use the total-home square footage on an advertisement as proof that useful cleaned air reaches those rooms.
Check placement and settings against the manual. Keep the cleaner's air path clear. Note whether it runs continuously or is usually at a quiet setting. Ask the maker for particle-delivery evidence at the setting you actually use, rather than assuming its highest published result applies there.
To check the pattern, use consistent observations in the occupied areas, with the cleaner setting and location recorded. A reading close to the cleaner can be very different from the rest of the home. EPA cautions that monitor placement, drafts, and proximity to sources affect interpretation. EPA's monitor guidance.
We would prioritize an appropriately supported cleaner-air space during an outdoor smoke episode, then compare added room units or a compatible central option for the remaining needs. If the smoke comes from an indoor activity, address that source too. A larger purifier should not become permission to keep producing indoor smoke.
Keep the particle goal separate from gas or fresh-air questions. A smoke CADR is particle evidence. It does not establish removal of every smoke-related gas or adequate ventilation. Ask a qualified indoor-air or ventilation professional to address those questions if they remain.
Your next step is a room map, the exact cleaner's rating, its usual setting, and readings from consistent occupied locations. Confirm any HVAC assessment MGI can perform. We would compare coverage by real rooms and useful operation, rather than simply buy a larger advertised square-foot number.
