Find out what the combined visit includes

Request a written list for the furnace and AC separately. Ask which tasks can be completed on the scheduled date and which operating tests depend on suitable conditions.

For cooling, clarify whether the visit includes coil and drainage inspection, condition-appropriate cleaning, and an operating assessment. ENERGY STAR recommends annual checks before the season, with cooling in spring and heating in fall. That is general guidance, not a universal contract or warranty deadline. ENERGY STAR maintenance checklist.

For heating, ask how the provider will assess the actual furnace before it is needed for winter, and whether the scheduled visit can complete the necessary checks. The provider should explain any test limitations for your equipment rather than simply stamp both systems “serviced.”

Compare timing with coverage

Check the owner manuals, manufacturer certificates, and any maintenance agreement for the actual requirements. Ask whether annual service is required, what it includes, and whether a particular seasonal timing is specified.

Manufacturer coverage and a provider's discounted plan are separate documents. Read the one that applies to your equipment and purchase. Carrier warranty and certificate resources.

A company recommendation for two seasonal visits may be sensible without being a universal warranty requirement. Ask for the reason and the applicable terms.

Ask what happens when a test is deferred

If the combined visit cannot complete a meaningful cooling or heating check, find out whether a return visit is included, its cost, and who schedules it. Request documentation of completed tasks and unresolved items.

If both systems can receive the appropriate care in one visit, the combined option may provide useful value. If key checks are omitted or only available later for an additional fee, compare the complete annual cost with separately timed service.

Do not wait for a routine appointment if either system has an active failure or safety concern. Report that separately so the provider can assess the urgency.

Your next step is to request the two service checklists, timing limitations, and return-visit terms. Choose the arrangement that completes the needed care before you depend on the system, with a record showing what was actually checked.
