Is my whole-home humidifier using too much water or hot water?

Homeowner guide · 2 min read

Some humidifiers send water to a drain as part of normal operation. Others use a different design. Our recommendation is to compare measured use with the exact model's normal operating pattern before calling it waste or changing the feed. A unit that leaks or keeps feeding when it should be off needs a fault assessment.

Start with the model, water connection, and operating history. Note whether the water concern appears only during humidification, continues while the unit is idle, or comes from outside the intended drain path. Keep meter or bill records over comparable periods, including other household water uses. A larger bill by itself does not isolate the humidifier.

For example, AprilAire explains that its drain-through models use draining water to flush minerals; the 400/400M design differs. Its evaporative applications can also have model- and control-dependent hot-water requirements. Its Model 800 steam unit requires cold supply water. Do not transfer one setup's feed rule to another. AprilAire's water-use guidance.

Ask the qualified provider to measure the feed and drain behavior during a normal call and after the call ends. The report should compare those observations with the manufacturer's specifications. Have them assess the valve, controls, water connection, and drain as the model requires. A parts list should follow that finding, rather than substitute for it.

Do not reduce water by pinching a line, changing an orifice, or partly closing a valve on your own. Ask for a manufacturer-approved correction if the measured feed is wrong. For an external plumbing fault, name the qualified plumbing provider and its work separately.

Hot-water cost needs its own explanation. Request the measured or supported water volume, operating time, supplied water temperature, and the water heater's energy assumptions. Then compare the water and energy consequences of the supported options. A dollar estimate without those inputs is not a home-specific estimate.

We would first correct unintended use. If operation is normal but the running cost or care burden is a poor fit, compare a different compatible approach against the home's measured humidity need. Do not assume a lower-water product will give the same useful output or fit the existing system.

Your next step is a model-specific water-use assessment, with the meter pattern and idle-versus-operating observations attached. Confirm MGI's particular humidification scope and who owns any plumbing work. Ask the provider to state plainly: normal use, confirmed fault, or a finding that still needs more evidence.
