Start with the right instructions

Use the full model number to obtain the current applicable owner manual. Similar-looking heaters can have different controls and care procedures. Ask the installer to identify the owner tasks, their timing, and the steps needed before and after each task.

For filter care, follow that manual's cleaning, drying, and refitting instructions. Do not improvise a replacement material or operate with the filter removed. If access requires a service cover rather than an owner-accessible filter, ask the service provider to handle it.

Keep professional care on the calendar

Bradford White's August 2026 hybrid manual includes qualified inspection and maintenance beyond the air filter, including tank and protective-component care. Its requirements apply to the covered equipment. Bradford White hybrid manual.

An anode rod is a protective metal rod inside the tank. It is used up as it helps protect the tank from rust and corrosion. Bradford White explains anode protection

For covered equipment, that manual lists anode inspection every two years and replacement when needed. Water conditions can change the interval, and softened water can require more frequent checks. The manual assigns inspection to a qualified servicer or plumber because of shock and leak hazards. Ask your provider to record the rod’s condition and next check; do not remove it yourself. Ask your provider to explain which items apply to your heater, including tank condition, drainage, electrical condition, and safety devices. Request a schedule that considers the water supply, equipment location, and prior findings. Do not use a generic annual reminder as proof that every necessary task was performed.

Make care easy to follow

Keep the manual, installation record, service reports, and photographs of warning messages together. Record the date of owner care and any changes in noise, hot-water delivery, or visible leakage. These observations help a technician distinguish a new problem from a repeated one.

If a warning returns soon after proper owner cleaning, request diagnosis rather than repeatedly clearing it. Your next step is to ask the model's service provider for a short written plan naming each task, its interval, and who performs it. That is a stronger maintenance system than remembering only the filter.
