Ask what made the proposed size necessary

Give the designer the vaulted ceiling height, windows, exposed exterior surfaces, adjacent heated spaces, insulation information, and rooms to be served. Request the heating and cooling calculations rather than a size based only on square footage.

Ask how the proposed model's cold-weather output compares with the calculated heating need. Then ask whether it can turn down enough for milder weather and cooling. “Bigger for winter” needs both answers.

If the recommendation changes after accurate information about the condo is entered, that is useful design work. It is not a reason to add extra size “just in case.”

Define what backup is meant to do

Ask whether built-in backup is needed for the design's heating shortfall, defrost operation, equipment outage, or another purpose. Request its output, electrical requirements, controls, and expected use. A qualified electrician should assess any needed electrical work.

Also confirm condo association requirements, outdoor placement, access, noise limits, and permission before relying on an installation plan. These are project conditions to resolve, not approvals we can infer.

Our preference is a complete designed heating system with an explained backup role. If the designer proposes no built-in backup, ask for the evidence supporting that choice and a realistic outage plan. A promise that someone can plug in several heaters later is not that evidence.

If a portable heater is used temporarily

Follow its instructions. CPSC says to keep portable heaters at least three feet from combustible items, plug electric heaters directly into a wall outlet, and turn them off for sleep. CPSC winter heating safety. Never leave one running unattended. CPSC heater safety guidance.

Do not assume temporary room heating will keep every room or pipe protected. If the home cannot stay suitably warm, arrange a warmer place to stay while qualified help resolves the issue.

Your next step is a reviewed load calculation and a written explanation of the backup decision. Buy the size and support this condo needs.
