Record what the cycle includes
Note the start and stop times, thermostat target and room temperature, and whether the house is reaching the target. Record whether only the fan changes sound or the whole heating event stops. Include whether the problem began immediately or after a later thermostat change.
Short cycling can have more than one cause, including thermostat issues, airflow restrictions, and sizing. A brief cycle alone does not identify which one applies. Trane short-cycling guidance.
Do not force the higher stage, change installer settings, remove panels, or keep resetting the furnace. Ordinary filter and blocked-grille observations are useful only within the owner manual's safe care instructions. They do not replace startup verification.
Ask for the installation checks, not another general reassurance
Have the installer explain the selected size, thermostat staging configuration, blower setup, and measured operation. Ask whether the operating temperature rise (how much the furnace warms air passing through it) and airflow-related requirements were verified in the applicable heating stages.
If the furnace is larger than the home needs, ask for the sizing basis. If it is stopping on a safety condition, ask what actual finding explains that condition. If the thermostat is ending the request too soon, ask how the control setup and location were checked.
Carrier's short-cycling guidance identifies airflow, sizing, and controls as possible contributors and calls for qualified service when the cycling persists. That is a diagnostic direction, not proof that any one of those caused your new installation's behavior. Carrier short-cycling guidance.
Know what the callback and warranty cover
Ask how the installation agreement treats a first-day problem, who owns the follow-up, and whether any diagnostic or corrective charge applies. Do not assume a parts warranty pays all labor or every installation correction. The actual warranty card and contractor agreement govern. Carrier example warranty card.
If a change is proposed, ask what it should correct and how the result will be verified. A thermostat swap without a finding, or a higher-rated protective switch, does not establish a resolved cause.
Your next step is to send the cycle record to the installer and request the commissioning findings and corrective plan. Keep the problem open until the explanation and post-work checks address the behavior you reported.
